Shura Council approves constution amendment
Egypt, Politics, 3/7/2005
The Egyptian Shura Council yesterday unanimously approved in principle the amendment of Article 76 of the Constitution allowing multi-candidate Presidential elections.
Shura Council Speaker Safwat El-Sherif announced that the council's endorsement would be referred to the President of the Republic and the People's Assembly Speaker.
Shura Council Speaker Safwat El-Sherif said the Constitution's amendment will lift political life in Egypt to higher levels of democracy and place it in a remarkable rank among world democracies.
El-Sherif urged the Egyptian people to be very well aware of the challenges of the age, as such awareness was the guarantee to steer clear of any outside attempt to control the country.
He also urged the political parties to shoulder their responsibility and participate in the coming presidential elections.
El-Sherif yesterday said that President Mubarak's announcement of constitutional changes to allow the country to have multi-candidate Presidential elections through free, direct and secret ballot, crowns the country's democratic march, enriches its political life and propels steps towards more political reforms.
In an address marking the opening of Shura Council deliberations over Mubarak's proposed constitutional amendments concerning Presidential elections, he said that the announcement made by the President on February 26 opens the door wide open for unprecedented freedoms.
The constitutional reforms that the president seeks are coming in response to people's demands and will meet their aspirations for leading a better future, Sherif said.
