Attacks escalated in Iraq, Iraqi police use of TV questioned
Iraq, Politics, 3/7/2005

The Islamic army in Iraq said it had destroyed what it said to be an American military vehicle by an explosive in al-Saqlaweyah area to the south of Baghdad.

The group said that the vehicle was destroyed and its occupants were killed and that helicopters were seen transporting the victims.

Meantime, the group calling itself the 1920 revolution groups, the military wing of the national Islamic resistance in Iraq said it had detonated one explosive in an American military vehicle to the south of Baghdad.

In this regard, the Iraqi Islamic party, the largest Sunni party in Iraq, denied involvement of any of its members in acts of violence in the country. This was expressed in reaction to supposed "confessions" made by one suspect that appeared in the program "terrorism in the fist of justice" who alleged that he is from the Iraqi Islamic party and that he drinks wine and does not pray and he talked about attacks he carried out against Iraqis.

In an official statement, the party accused sides from the Iraqi police of "fabricating these programs at a very sensitive time when certain 'hired' terrorists sides kill Iraqis in order to perpetuate sectarianism and trying relentlessly to flare up civil war."

For his part, chairman of the joint army chief of staff for the new Iraqi forces lt. gen. Babaker Bardakhan Zeibari stressed that the armed forces will be able during the 6 coming months to restore back security to the country in cooperation with the police forces so as the coalition forces can pull out to their bases outside the Iraqi cities.

Zeibari who has been serving in the Iraqi army since three years said that two contingents from the new Iraqi armed forces have recently assumed security responsibility in al-Karaph and al-Rasafah in Baghdad. The Iraqi military leader did not criticize the former American administrator of Iraq, Paul Bremer, over desolving the Iraqi army, considering that the "army has dissolved itself by itself and that Bremer only signed the death certificate."

With the continued military campaigns in Iraq to chase suspected persons of carrying attacks against Iraqi civilians and the security and military forces, the American and Iraqi forces launched a large scale military operation in Samera city in search of the leader of al-Qaida organization in Iraq, Abu Musaab al-Zarqawio.

The deputy governor of Salah Eddine said that the campaign will last for one week to detain or kill 250 suspects who are active within more than 7 armed groups. So far, the campaign resulted in arresting 27 persons.
