Continued killings, detentions in Iraq

More than ten persons were killed and others injured in frequent attacks in Iraq. Police commander of al-Badeir district col. Ghayeb Hattab Zreib was killed near his house, 45 km to the east of al-Dewaneh city, 180 Km to the south of Baghdad. Unidentified gunmen opened fire at him and then fled. One woman was injured in the attack.

In al-Ramadi, a medical source stressed that three Iraqis were killed and other 6 injured following clashes that started since Thursday in Berwanah area near Haditha, 350 km to the west of Baghdad. According to eye witnesses, the American forces besieged the city since Thursday, and detained 6 persons suspected to have carried out acts against the American forces, in addition to preventing exit and entry to the city.

In Baqouba, an official police source said that one Iraqi as killed and other three injured in a booby trapped car explosion to the west of the city. An official source in the Iraqi army in the city stressed that 10 suspected men were arrested including one Egyptian over carrying out acts hostile to the Iraqi forces.

The source explained that the police tried to defuse a Mitsubishi rent car but it blew up before arriving to it. The source indicated that the car was empty at the moment of the explosion.

In Samera, 110 Km to the north of Baghdad, police sources said that three civilians were killed and other 15 arrested during a mopping up operation in the outskirts of the city on Friday and Thursday evening.

The sources said that one civilian was killed on Friday as a result of a bomb explosion that targeted a convoy for the American army. The body of two men with tightened hands were found killed by bullets to the south east of the city.

The sources said that a joint force from the Iraqi army launched on Thursday evening a campaign of breaking in and detentions that covered al-Barieh, al-Qalaa to the south east of Samera and resulted in detaining 15 suspects.

Police sources in Beiji, 200 Km to the north of Baghdad, said that gunmen kidnapped col. Hamid Hardan, one senior officer in the police directorate in Beiji on Friday when they intercepted his car on the main way linking the city to Musil to the north of the country and took him to an unknown destination.
