Syria's statement at the United Nations on women

Head of the Syrian Commission for Family Affairs, Mouna Ghanem, in a statement read by before the 49th session of the Woman Situation Committee yesterday at the United Nations, indicated that half a million Syrian men and women were expelled from their villages and cities due to the Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan, and there are other 18 thousands who are suffering under the Israeli occupation.

Ghanem pointed out that justice and equality between men and women is inherent in the Syrian Constitution, and reflected by the numerous developmental policies stressing that the Syrian civil and commercial law and the law of labour grant equal rights to both sexes.

She went on to say that the Syrian woman has entered the people's Assembly,PA, in 1973 and her presence has increased to reach /12/ percent at the PA, the highest in the developing countries, pointing out that the Syrian woman has also assumed leading posts such as a minister, judge,ambassador and attorney general.
