Lebanese Islamic Council: relations with Syria are strong

Supreme Islamic Council in Lebanon stressed on Thursday that relations between Syria and Lebanon are distinguished and strong.

"The importance of bilateral relations does not only stem from historical relations, relative and neighboring communications, but it rather comes as result of joint and vital interests," the Council said in a statement following a meeting at Dar al-Fatwa chaired by Lebanese Grand Mufti Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Kabani.

It underlined that the Taif Accord gained the blessings of world countries and the UN, so we should respect it and move according to its provisions.

He considered the assassination of former Lebanese Premier Rafic Hariri as a large national disaster, calling for continuing investigation into the crime to know who carried out it.

Meantime, the Follow-Up Committee of the Lebanese National Gathering stressed on Thursday the necessity of committing to the national unity based on al-Taif Accord.

"Due to the dangerous and sensitive situation, all Lebanese people should raise themselves to the level of national responsibility and to adopt dialogue," the Gathering chaired by Speaker of Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri said in a statement following a meeting in Ain al-Tenih.

The statement added that the accelerating developments in the country and the crisis which poses a threat of a security-vacuum, underlines the importance of adopting an initiative to hold consultations ahead of forming a National Federal government that groups all Lebanese political spectrums.
