Yemeni- German economic agreements, Gulf interests in railways
Yemen-Germany, Politics, 3/4/2005

Yemen and Germany have finalized three economic cooperation agreements during the visit carried out by the German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder to Sanaa, which was the first visit by a German Chancellor to Yemen.

Schroeder stressed in conclusion of his meeting on Thursday with the Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh that firm economic relations between the two countries are solid and that the two sides agreed to enhance them.

One of the signed agreements aims at avoiding double taxation and another to encourage and protect investment while the third agreement signed between the Yemeni government and Siemens company states to establish an electricity station funded by the Arab fund for social and economic development.

Schroeder has expressed the interest of Qatar, and Bahrain in the German project to establish railways and an express train linking between the Gulf states. The German chancellor invited members in the Gulf Cooperation Council GCC to visit Germany with the aim of getting acquainted with the details of the proposed railway project which covers an area of 2000 Kilometers from Kuwaiti to the north to Oman in the south of the Gulf region.

Today, the German chancellor will visit Oman following a Gulf tour during which he had visited Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain.
