Al-Jafaari accepts a Kurdish Presidency for Iraq, reserves over Karkouk
Iraq, Politics, 3/4/2005
The candidate of the United Iraqi Coalition for Prime Minister of the Iraqi government, Ibrahim al-Jafaari, notified leaders of the Kurdish parties during their meetings with him in Irbil and al-Suleimaneyah, his readiness to agree on that leader of the Kurdistani national federation party Jalal al-Talibani will assume the Presidency of the republic, but he stressed he will not accept the demand of expanding the Kurdish territories along the border with Karkouk.
Al-Jafaari's call, who presides over al-Dawa ( call) party meeting, came in the course of his attempts to get the support of the Kurdish group so as to be able to gain the needed two thirds members of the parliament in order to be nominated for leading the government.
Dialogue is expected to continue between the representatives of the United Iraqi Coalition which won 140 seats out of 275 seats in the National Assembly (parliament) and the leaders of the Kurdish list which occupied the second position and won 75 seats in order to hold deepen consultations on forming the government and for the Kurds to present their demands officially.
Differences in view points between the Kurds and the Shiite emerged and affected the date set for convening the Iraqi National Assembly and also raised fears over honoring the political program which states to give a ten months grace period in order to draw the constitution and approve it in a referendum and organize new elections.
Both Talibani and the leader of the Kurdistani democratic parties Masoud Barazani said they will rally with any group that fulfill their basic demands including the annexation of Karkouk to Kurdistan and approve the principle of federalism and ensuring that the Kurdish "Bashmargha" forces are not desolved within a united multilateral democratic.
