Abbas on the establishment of the Palestinian state
Palestine, Politics, 3/3/2005

The chairman of the Palestinian authority Mahmoud Abbas stressed on Wednesday the need to allow what he called the "opportunity of the new age for peace and hope in the Middle East to work in order to establish a Palestinian state as soon as possible."

This confirmation was made following Abbas's talks with the head of the European commission Jose Barso and the higher representative for the European union Foreign policy Javier Solana.

Abbas stressed that his recent objective is to establish a Palestinian state set in the peace plan he had submitted to the Quartet which also includes the USA, Russia and the UN.

Meantime, Abbas called on the European Union, the first donor side for the Palestinians as it offers 250 million EUROS annually, for continued support and to enhance its political role in the Quartet, a sponsor for the Roadmap peace plan.

The European Union vowed to enhance its role for the Palestinians. It commended the Palestinian president his commitment to restore back order since his election. The EU foreign policy official Javier Solana said that the union will support the Palestinians to achieve their dreams to a Palestinian state as well as providing more economic support.

For his part Abbas renewed his determination to continue loyalty to his obligations to restore back order in the Palestinian areas. He said that the Palestinian society condemned almost unanimously the explosion in Tel Aviv on Friday and considered it damaging for the case of peace.
