NDP Parliamentary body unanimously approves Mubarak's historic initiative

Egypt's National Democratic Party NDP parliamentary body, at its meeting yesterday, agreed in principle on the historic initiative launched by President Hosni Mubarak for amending Article no. 76 of the constitution under which the President of the Republic would be selected through direct and secret balloting.

The parliamentary body expressed its appreciation of President Mubarak's initiative which is considered as a landmark on the road towards democracy.

This came during the expanded meeting which was held yesterday under Safwat AL Sharif, the Secretary General of the National democratic Party, Ahmed Fathi Sorour, the speaker of the People's Assembly, Kamal AL Shazli, the NDP assistant Secretary General, Zakaria Azmi, the secretary of financial and administrative affairs, a number of ministers and the members of the People's Assembly and the Shura Council.

Safwat Al Sherif said during the committee meeting, a number of visions was discussed regarding the guarantees and restrictions which govern nomination for the Presidential post.

He said there must be a minimum number of supporters for the Presidential candidate from among the members of the People's Assembly and the Shura Council as well as elected local councils allover governorates.

The meeting discussed guarantees and the formation of the elections supervisory committee which will comprise figures elected from the legislative councils, and chairmen of the relevant judicial bodies such as the supreme constitutional court, the court of cassation and the state council.

Dr. Ahmed Fathi Srour, the speaker of the people's Assembly said the amendment of Article no 76 of the constitution is a step forward on the path of democracy.

Dr. Srour said the elections process will be supervised by a committee under his chairmanship. He said this committee will be fully independent and its decisions will be final and uncontestable.
