Turkish campaign of solidarity with Syria begins
Syria-Turkey, Politics, 3/2/2005

Turkey's popular campaign of solidarity with Syria against US and international pressures set off on Tuesday from Ankara heading to Damascus and Aleppo.

The campaign is to underline Turkey's intellectuals and civil organizations solidarity with Syria during these conditions that Syria is passing through, an organizer said.

The Orient Conference Society Spokesman Mohammed Bakkar Ouglo told SANA the aim of the campaign was a bid to formulate a culture front as to face foreign pressures and to clarify that the Turkish people are against international pressures and threats and that Turks are with the Syrian people.

" We would like to direct a message to the Syrian people that we are with you and will always be against pressures and international threats," the spokesman said.

Representative of the society Norai Mart told SANA the target of the campaign was to underline the Turkish people rejection of the US intention of interference in the region's affairs.

"There is no reason for putting pressures against Syria and conditions in each country are a matter of his own affairs and no body has the right to interfere," the representative said.

The campaign comes on the anniversary of Turkey's rejection to the US forces entrance into Iraq via Turkey and poses as a symbolic mission to express Turks denunciation of targeting Syrians.

" Turks will support Syria in all circumstances as not to make concessions," The Justice and Global Peace Committee and Head of the Turkish Solidarity and Freedom party spokesman Hakan Takmaz said.

The group held a press conference before heading to Syria to renew solidarity with Syria while facing threats and to protest against that.

Participants raised banners calling to cancel the Turkish-Israeli-American agreements and to underline that democracy can't be consolidated by weapons.

" We are with all peace loving peoples and reject all kinds of threat and occupation," a banner said.

About 60 culture, media and social personality and some Turkish intellectuals as well political parties members and syndicates members are taking part at the campaign.

Observers said the move constitutes a qualitative drive in ties between the two neighboring countries.
