President al-Assad message to Mubarak
Syria-Egypt, Politics, 2/28/2005
President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt was handed a letter from President Bashar al-Assad on the latest developments in the region. During a meeting Sunday, Foreign Minister Farouq al-Shara handed President Mubarak the message.
Earlier, al-Shara, separately, met with Egyptian counterpart Ahmad abul-Gheit and Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa for talks on the current Arab situation particularly on the Iraqi scene, the situation in Lebanon, enhancing the Palestinian national unity in addition to the Mideast peace process which will be the main topics on the agenda of Arab Foreign Ministers forthcoming meeting in Cairo.
Following his meetings, al-Shara underscored Syria's commitment to implement the Taif Accord in Lebanon which has a complete Arab and international consensus.
In a statement to reporters, al-Shara said "We are keen to commit ourselves with al-Taif Agreement and implement what is pertaining to Syria ... All must know that the Taif Agreement has become a constitution and we are careful to commit ourselves with." He added that Syria will keep its good, fraternal and deep rooted relation with all sections of Lebanese people.
Regarding the Mideast peace process al-Shara said "Syria is interested in the just and comprehensive peace process in the region on the basis of Arab peace initiative and in supporting the Palestinian national unity." Regarding Iraq, he pointed out that Syria is committed to Iraq's security and stability because Syria is a neighboring country to Iraq.
Answering a question on the Israeli accusation of Syria regarding the explosion which took place in Tel Aviv late Friday, Minister al-Shara stressed that the accusation is baseless, because Syria has stretched hands for peace and supported the Palestinian people to restore their rights peacefully.
He added the Palestinian national unity seemed to have been achieved and the Palestinian powers could be united with each other to resume peace process, clearing that the Syrian support, which is very important for the unity of the Palestinian factions, has annoyed Israel.
"I wouldn't rule out, basing on political analysis, not evidences, that Israeli fingers could be behind the explosion which happened on Friday, and that act had no relation with the resistance," Minister al-Shara said. For his part, Moussa said that his meeting with al-Shara dealt with topics to be put on the agenda of forthcoming Arab summit and Arab Foreign Ministers meeting.
Abul-Gheit, by his turn, stressed that his talks with al-Shara focused on the current situation in Lebanon and on the regional condition.
