Over 40 Moroccans arrested on Spanish coasts
Morocco-Spain, Local, 2/26/2005
Spanish sea rescue patrols arrested on Friday afternoon off the southern city of Almunecar a dinghy with 42 Moroccans, including four women, who were trying to stealthily reach the Spanish territories.
An official source says the dinghy was found by a small fishing boat which informed the sea rescue patrols which towed it to the port of Motril, in the region of Granada.
The group, which also includes a teen, were handed over to the Red Cross and will be repatriated.
Closer cooperation between Morocco and Spain in the fight against illegal migration has helped significantly cut the number of makeshift boats and clandestine migrants that try to reach Spain or the Canary Islands respectively by 21.44% (740 in 2004) and 18.28% (15,671) compared to 2003.
