Butaflika: Algeria losses since 1992: 150,000 killing, $ 30 billion
Algeria, Politics, 2/25/2005

The Algerian president Abdul Aziz Butaflika announced on Wednesday that the acts of violence attributed to armed Islamists resulted since 1992 on the killing of 150,000 persons and financial losses estimated at $ 30 billion.

Butaflika said in statements before trade unions cadres issued by the Algerian papers that "terrorism resulted in killing 150,000 persons in our country and $ 30 billion of damages in the social and economic infrastructure." In his talks about a likely general pardoning, Butaflika said, while one woman was waving a picture for her son killed as a result of acts of violence, "I can issue a pardoning but I will not do this only when tears are dried and wounds are healed," he added.

Butaflika talked about the possibility of celebrating the 50 anniversary of the liberation war in the first of October, 2004. He spoke on the possibility of issuing a general pardoning but with the consent of people. The Algerian foreign minister Abdul Aziz Balkhadem said that a referendum will be held on such a pardoning during this year, while societies of the victims of terrorism expressed opposition to adopt the law according to which "terrorists will escape justice and judiciary."
