Calls to release Tunisian detainees
Tunisia, Politics, 2/24/2005

The "International bourse organization for the freedom of expression" called on the Tunisian government to release the chief editor of the Tunisian weekly al-Fajer( dawn) Hammadi Jabali and hundreds of detainees because of their religious and political beliefs, who never resorted to violence or advocated it.

In 2004, Tunisia made the second multilateral elections since independence from France in 1956. President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali who has been in power since 17 years won a new term of office and got 95% of the votes in the elections which were described by opposition parties as false.

Following the presidential elections which were held in 2004, Amnesty International called on President Ben Ali to honor international conventions and put an end to the violations of human rights. A practice which overwhelmed the country for more than one decade.
