Demonstrations in Cairo against extension for President Mubarak
Egypt, Politics, 2/22/2005

Hundreds of Egyptians demonstrated on Monday before Cairo university against extension for President Hosni Mubarak for a fifth term of office that may allow him to stay in power for 30 years. The demonstrations were also against what has been rumored on inheriting the rule by his younger son Jamal.

The demonstration, which was cordoned by the security forces, from all sides was organized by the Egyptian movement for the change "Kefayah" (enough) which includes Egyptian intellectuals, journalists, writers and trade unionists from the Nasserite lefty, Marxists and several liberals.

The demonstrators who gathered before the monument of Cairo university chanted slogans "down Mubarak " and raised banners read "Enough" and "no for extension nor inheritance." A statement by the movement deplored the agreement of certain opposition party forces in Egypt with the government to postpone the democratic demands and amend the constitution until after the extending for President Mubarak for a fifth term of office in September this year.

The statement considered that needed democratic changes do not accept delay and deceiving, in completing it, until after the referendum, noting that the postponement will be until unlimited time.
