Amnesty International: Iraqi women not in better condition than under Saddam's rule
Iraq, Politics, 2/22/2005

Amnesty International said that women in Iraq are not in a better situation of what they were under the rule of Saddam Hussein, two years after the invasion of Iraq which was led by the USA.

A report by the organization under the title "Iraq: decades of sufferings" indicated that the campaign of repression under the rule of Saddam Hussein have been replaced by killing and sexual abuse crimes including those carried out at the hands of the American forces.

The organization which is concerned with human rights said that the absence of the law and increasing acts of killing, kidnapping and rape limited the freedom of women to move and their ability to go to work or to school.

The report explained that several women who were held by the American forces talked in interviews with the organization about being exposed to beating, threats of rape, humiliating treatment and long times of isolated imprisonment.

But the report noted one positive aspect, commending the foundation of several groups in defense of human rights including groups which concentrate on protecting women from violence.

Concerning reactions, the Pentagon said that though it did not study the report but it takes any allegations over violating the detainees seriously. It stressed, represented by its spokesman Joe Richard, abidance to monitor this type of behavior and dealing with it appropriately.
