On UN's investigation into the Hariri assassination
Lebanon, Politics, 2/21/2005

Concerning investigations to the assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri, the speaker of the Lebanese parliament Nabih Berri said that his country will cooperate with the UN investigation committee within the context of Lebanon's sovereignty, adding that the Lebanese President Emil Lahoud received a message to this effect to which he responded as from the concept of cooperation.

Berri's statement is considered a change in the position of the Lebanese authority from this case after its rejection of the principle of having foreign investigators. Annan had assigned one UN security official, the Irish Peter Gerald to preside over an international investigation committee to discuss the implications of the Hariri assassination.

Chairman of the Lebanese investigations team judge Rasheed Mazhar said for his part that two Swiss experts will arrive in Beirut this week, repeating earlier Lebanese statements which noted that investigations is not yet conclusive on whether the explosion was a result of a suicide bomber or an explosive implanted on the ground.

In Amman, the Jordanian king Abdullah II called in a televised interview for a neutral investigation in the implications of the Hariri assassination.

Meantime, the family of the late Hariri who has the Saudi nationality said it opens his house in Riyadh to receiving condolences on his demise.
