Lebanese opposition escalate confrontation, reject government's accusations
Lebanon, Politics, 2/18/2005

The Lebanese opposition escalated the tone of its confrontation with the Lebanese government and rejected the accusations addressed to it that it is using the incident of the assassination of Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri for political gains. The opposition leader of the Socialist Progressive party, Walid Junblat, described the government as an authority of terrorism, hireling criminal.

He said that hundreds of thousands in Hariri's funeral said "yes for a free Lebanon, yes for freedom and no for mandate and terrorism," noting there will be a day when "all Lebanese people stand and drive the authority to hell." Former Lebanese President Amin al-Jemayyel said that the size of people's participation in the Hariri funeral is a message for all in the inside, and for Syria, the Arabs and the world to that there is a firm Lebanese will calling for "restoring back Lebanon's sovereignty and role." Al-Jemayyel also called for forming a national commission for salvation, describing the formation of an interim government as just a weak measure for the historical incident that took place in Lebanon.

For his part, the Lebanese prime minister Omar Karami said that political issues will be only discussed after the end of the mourning period for Hariri. He added he understands people's reaction.
