Syria - Iran solidarity
Syria-Iran, Politics, 2/17/2005

Syria underlined on Wednesday solidarity with Iran in facing what it has been exposed to of unfair threats under various names and pretexts.

"What is taking place between Syria and Iran of consultation and coordination makes a live example of what ties among Arab and Islamic states must be mainly during this period," Prime Minister Naji Otari said.

This was at the opening of the Syrian-Iranian Higher Joint Committee meeting taking place in Tehran.

Otari criticized policies of globalism that constituted a threat to Arab and Islamic societies warning that these societies have been exposed to schemes and suspicious plans as to contain them and change their political maps via anti-terror slogans and the use of the military force to change regimes under the pretext of spreading democracy.

He noted that Syria had called to a precise definition of terror and to distinguish between terrorism and the right to resist occupation, underlining at the same time keenness on dialogue as a means of understanding and solving differences and settling disputes.

Speaking of the Mideast peace process, Premier Otari emphasized Syria's view that "peace would not be maintained unless Israel abides by the international community's will, and adhered to the international resolutions." On Iraq, Otari urged all world and neighboring countries to leave no stone unturned as to help Iraq to move out of its ordeal by maintaining at the same time Iraq's interest and keeping its land and people integrated.

Premier Otari noted that desire to widen horizons of cooperation poses an impulse to discuss all ways and means of boosting prospects to strengthen them in all fields.

He pointed out at the need to reactivate the Syrain-Iranian Businessmen Council role and work to sign new agreement that would lead to increase trade exchange and development and economic cooperation.

Iranian Fist Vice President Reza Aref announced Iran's standing by Syria to confront all challenges and pressures in the region as he underlined Iran's standing by the Palestinian people until they get their rights and national sovereignty. He stressed Iraq's unity as a land and people and the achievement of stability and security there.

Aref wished visits and meetings might bring valuable results to meet the two countries's interests and find the adequate ground to upgrade ties forward.
