Turabi's party meet officials at Washington's embassy in Khartoum
Sudan-USA, Politics, 2/17/2005

A group of leaders of the Sudanese People's Congress party held a lengthy meeting with officials in the American embassy in Khartoum on Wednesday.

Chairman of the political secretariat in the party Bashir Adam Rahmah said in a press statement that the meeting discussed the peace agreement signed between the government and the Sudan People Liberation Movement (southern rebels) and means of implementing it and impediments facing it in addition to Darfur incidents and means of dealing with the situation politically.

On the other hand, the Sudanese authorities cancelled a press conference for the party which is led by Hassan al-Turabi who has been since 10 months in "Copper" prison in Khartoum. The security forces also prevented several journalists and correspondents of the mass media who came to attend the conference from getting a hall dedicated for that and detained member of the party Naji Dahab who was supervising the convening of the conference.

In a statement the People's Congress party described the cancellation measure of the press conference as an oppressive measure. It said that "this behavior by the security shows that the government is not serious to implement the peace agreement as stated in the articles of the said agreement that gives more freedom for political activity.

The statement explained that the People's Congress delegation went to Asmara in the open to meet with the next partner in the authority, the people's movement, led by John Garang. The opposition party also called on the government to abide by and work for the implementation of the peace agreement and the release of all political detainees.
