Syria-Regional, Politics, 2/11/2005
The Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara said that Damascus will host a conference for countries which neighbor Israel with the participation of the Palestinians, as soon as possible.
Al-Shara added during his meeting with his Jordanian peer Hani al-Malqi in Damascus on Thursday that he will start contacts with the foreign ministers of the neighboring states to that effect.
The Jordanian FM arrived in Damascus in a short visit during which he held talks with the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that dealt with the next Arab summit in Algeria and supporting the peace process on all Syrian, Lebanese and Palestinian tracks.
The Jordanian papers on Thursday issued statements made by al-Malqi in which he indicated that Damascus will host a meeting between Israel's neighbors (Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt ) and the Palestinians in order to revive the peace initiative adopted by the Arab summit of March 2002.
He stressed that the Damascus meeting aims at coordinating Arab stances on the peace process and issues linked, noting he will also brief the Syrian officials with results of Sharm al-Sheikh summit conference.
