Barazani rejects monopolizing authority by one sect
Iraq, Politics, 2/11/2005

Concerning political developments in Iraq chairman of the Kurdistani Democratic Party, Masoud al-Barazani, expressed his opposition to monopolizing authority by any one sect in Iraq.

Al-Barazani said after talks he held with the interim Iraqi prime minister Eyad Allawi in Irbil that he stressed the next government to be supported by all Iraqis. He explained that the Kurds alliance with Allawi is not linked to his staying in his post.

For his part, Allawi confirmed what al-Barazani stated and considered the demands of the Kurds to assume one of the political posts in the next Iraqi government, the post of president or the prime minister as an "Iraqi demand." Allawi did not give a frank answer towards a promise he had got form al-Barazani to support him staying in his post as a prime minister. He said he agreed with the Kurdish leader on the need to maintain agreement between the Iraqi political parties in order to chose the executive administration for the country and the main posts after completing the selection of votes which took place on January 30th.

Politicians and experts considered that Allawi wants to lead the opposition in the interim national council ( parliament) in confrontation of the list backed by al-Seistani which practically guarantees winning the elections though official results that have not been announced yet.

After a partial selection of votes, the list occupied by Eyad Allawi occupied the third place by getting 13.6% of the votes after the Kurdish list which took 24.6%. However, the "United Iraqi coalition" list which wins the support of al-Seistani is on the forefront of the elections as it got 51.4% of the votes.
