Egypt, Politics, 2/11/2005

Members of al-Ghad opposition party on Wednesday evening demonstrated demanding the release of the chairman of the party Ayman Nour who is spending the reserve imprisonment penalty of 45 days for investigation over a falsification of documents related to the creation of the party.

The demonstrators chanted slogans describing the case as political in order to get Nour away from the political scene. They accused the speaker of the Egyptian parliament Fatehi Sorour as being unfair to Nour, who is a member of the parliamen, by lifting parliamentary immunity from him.

Hamid Abu Sa'adah, the chairman of the Egyptian organization for human rights, who took part in the demonstration condemned the arrest of Nour, considering that what Nour is suffering is the price for the political reforms in Egypt.

Abu Saadah considered that the reason behind the crisis is demanding al-Ghad party of to amend the Egyptian constitution, expressing confidence in the Egyptian judiciary in this case.

On the other hand, members of the party's higher committee held a meeting in which they decided to launch a campaign to collect the signature of one million citizens demanding the release of Nour.

Leading figures in al-Ghad party denied during the meeting that Nour had asked for support from outside Egypt for his release. They expressed their concern over his health conditions describing it as "not well." They also stressed that he did not try to commit suicide as rumored in the Egyptian press.

Jamilah Ismael, Nour's wife and the media official in the party stressed attachment to issuing al-Ghad newspaper over which a decision was issued on Tuesday banning its publication by the high council for the press.
