On the Shiite celebration of Ashoura, Iraqi border crossings closed

The interim Iraqi government announced the closure of the country's borders for 6 days of this month coinciding with the Shiite celebration of Ashoura anniversary which reaches its peak on the 29th of this month..
A spokesman for the interim Iraqi government said that the meeting was taken during a high ranking security meeting on Thursday of fears of attacks to take place, as great number of visits are expected for the holy shrines and the difficulty to control security conditions.
This was expressed at a time when explosions and confrontations continued in various parts of Iraq as Baghdad woke up on Thursday by the sound of an explosion in al-Tahrir ( liberation ) square.
Iraqi police sources said that the explosion which was a result of a booby trapped car resulted in killing four persons and injuring 6, noting that the attack was not a suicide attack.
Another car exploded near a military inspection car in Salman Bak to the south of Baghdad resulted in wounding five persons including several police men. A statement by the ministry of the interior said that 6 persons were arrested at the site of the attack.
In Tikrit, one Iraqi policeman was killed on Thursday and other two were injured. A campaign of arrest carried out by the Iraqi police forces in one of the villages of al-Sherqat town resulted also in killing two gunmen and detention of other 12.
On the other hand, the American army announced in a statement that one of its soldiers was killed on Wednesday evening to the north of Baghdad after he was attacked in Balad town.
