Egypt deploys hundreds of soldiers on Gaza borders
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 2/10/2005

The two foreign ministers of Egypt Ahmad Abu al-Gheit and his Israeli counterpart Silvan Shalom will sign today in Cairo a memorandum of understanding to deploy forces of the Egyptian border guards along the borders between Egypt and Gaza.

This came in the context of the escalated efforts to revive the peace process between the Palestinians and the Israelis which was crowned by the organization of the Sharm al-Sheikh summit.

News reports indicate that some 700 members of the border guards of the Egyptian army along the border will be deployed. This will be for the first time since the withdrawal of the Israeli occupation forces from Sinai, according to the Camp David Agreement in 1978 and the peace accord in 1979.

The agreements state that most areas of the Egyptian peninsula will be buffer zones and only members of the Egyptian police are deployed in. This memorandum came in the course of preparations for the unilateral Israeli withdrawal plan from Gaza.

An Egyptian security delegation, led by lt. gen. Mustafa al-Buheiri, deputy director general of the Egyptian intelligence Omar Suleiman, held talks in Gaza that will last for one week with senior officials and groups leaders.

Cairo also trains scores of members of the Palestinian security men on the ground they will assume the responsibility of security in the areas from where Israel withdraws as Egypt had vowed to help the Palestinian authority in spreading its control on Gaza, in particular.
