Somali parliament speaker returns back home in preparation for return back of the government
Somalia, Politics, 2/8/2005
Scores of thousands of Somalis lined up in the Somali capital Mogadishu to welcome the speaker of the parliament Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden who arrived in the country on Monday on top of a mission in charge of preparing for the return back of establishments into Somalia.
According to sources in the delegation, the mission which includes some 40 parliamentarians, many of them are warlords, will study the sites which can include government's offices and assess security conditions in the country.
The delegation is also due to meet local leaders and key figures of various tribes who share controlling parts of the country since the collapse of the regime of Muhammad Seyad Berri in 1991.
In a speech broadcast into loudspeakers, the speaker of the parliament said in the city which was destroyed by 14 years of civil war that "you have expressed your desire in a government that works.. the message is clear.. the Somalis are ready to accept and receive their government which stays now in Nairobi." Aden did not remark in his speech to the project of deploying an African forces for peace keeping which was approved by the government on Saturday and is opposed by huge number of parliamentarians and warlords.
The crowded Somalis raised banners saying "dismantle arms of the militias" and "Somalia is for the Somalis " and "nobody can interfere in the internal affairs of Somalia." A first mission including 27 parliamentarians headed for Mogadishu on February 2. It strongly expressed its opposition to a proposal on the deployment of a peace keeping force for IGAD including Somalia and its neighboring states "Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Sudan."
Worthy mentioning that foreign forces for peace keeping deployed by the UN between 1993- 1995 failed to restore stability to the country. Its efforts ended with violent confrontations with the local warlords.
