Riyadh conference on terrorism concludes today
Regional-Saudi Arabia, Politics, 2/8/2005
Works of the international conference on fighting terrorism held in Saudi Arabia will conclude by the call to expand measures of freezing assets which are used in carrying out terrorist attacks.
Security and intelligence officials who represent various countries of the world issued a statement in conclusion of their four-day meeting recommending that the frozen assets will be used as compensations for the victims of what is called terrorism.
The chairman of the Belgian delegation to the conference said that the final statement also recommends the need of enhancing international cooperation regarding what is called war against terrorism. It said it is premature to define the way of dealing with the assets and sums which were frozen.
Works of the conference witnessed heated debates between the participating side over the definition of "terrorism." The Iranian delegation refused that the resistance to occupation be classified as terrorism, in a clear remark to the Palestinian and Iraqi peoples.
Ali Abu al-Husna, member of the Iranian delegation said that "it cannot be held equal those who fight for their freedom while under occupation and those who kill innocent civilians," stressing that Tehran is serious to fighting terrorism and the exchange of information and expertise in this regard.
The Syrian delegation called in a work paper to the conference for deploring what it called state terrorism conducted by Israel.
