Algerian forces kill four gunmen
Algeria, Local, 2/7/2005

Algerian press sources disclosed that the army and police forces killed four persons suspected to be members in al-Salafeyah Wal Jihad groups, which is suspected to have links to al-Qaida organization.

The Algerian sources explained that the killed men are members of a specialized unit in bombs making for the purpose of carrying out attacks.

One Algerian soldier was also killed in a fire exchange with the gunmen during a breaking in operation carried out in Seidi Dawoud area in Bumerdas district. 50 km to the east of the capital Algiers.

To this effect, the Algerian President Abdul Aziz Butaflika is expected to propose a general referendum this year over issuing a general amnesty for the gunmen if they drop their weapons and surrender themselves. One official in a government organization for human rights said that the amnesty might also include members of security men who are suspected of committing violations.
