Sunni's view on participation in writing the constitution
Iraq, Politics, 2/7/2005
Concerning political developments in Iraq, a group of Sunni Party in Iraq who boycotted the recent legislative elections claimed intention to help in formulating the country's new constitution. This came in conclusion of the talks supervised by a delegation from the national assembly with the leader of the independent democratic bloc Adnan al-Baja Jee.
The said Sunni bloc is but a small movement which does not necessarily reflect the position of the majority of the Sunni forces which boycotted the elections. Allawi who launched this dialogue met with the political leaders of the Sunni in order to discuss the issue of taking part in the current political process in the country.
In this regard, the Muslim Scholars Commission demanded announcing a schedule for the withdrawal of the foreign forces from Iraq as a precondition to take part in the process of formulating the constitution. This was expressed following a meeting for the religious commission with the UN envoy Ashraf Qadhi.
Also at the political level, a prominent Shiite official stressed that the United Iraqi Coalition which is supported by the Shiite clergy Ayatullah Ali al-Seistani will persist that one of its members assume the post of the prime minister in the new government. The deputy prime minister and the interim leading figure in the Higher Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq Hamid al- Bayati said that the Shiite want this post and will not give it up.
