Sudan's Liberation Army in Darfur isolates political leadership
Sudan, Politics, 2/5/2005
Almost ten members of the military leaders of the rebel Sudan's Liberation Army in Darfur announced the isolation of the military leadership of their movement and their intention to appoint a new leadership.
A statement for the group issued on the site of the Sudan's liberation army on the Internet signed by one of the field leaders Juma' Muhammad Haqqar said that the military leaders decided to isolate the leadership of the movement which is positioned in the Eritrean capital, Asmara.
Haqqar stressed that the field leaders "will announce a new secretary general and president for the movement very soon." The current chairman of the movement and its secretary general announced that a split took place but they denied that this had constituted a threat to the movement.
The coordinator of the humanitarian affairs in the main rebel movement in Darfur, Suleiman Adam Jamous, said he will meet the leader of the split, noting their number is almost ten.
In addition to the smaller al-Adel Wal Musawat ( justice and equity) movement, the rebels in Darfur demand from the government better sharing of resources and the rule in the country.
There are fears that the split in the movement will complicate the already stumbled peace talks with the Sudanese government.
In the same context, the spokeswoman for the President of Nigeria announced that a meeting will be held in Cairo within two weeks on the conflict in Darfur.
The spokeswoman said in the press conference which was held in Abuja that the meeting which will be presided over by Nigeria will include Libya, Chad, Egypt and Gabon.
