Oman: continued detention for 10 Islamists
Oman, Politics, 2/4/2005
Western citizens in Muscat yesterday announced that 10 Islamists are still detained by the Omani authorities accused of forming an organization aiming to destabilize the national security.
One source said that "there are still ten persons in prison," adding "there seemed that only 20 were arrested" and not 300 or even 100 as stated before in the media. The source added that in contrary to what was mentioned in earlier information, no weapons were found during the acts of detention.
It is widely believed that the acts of detention were carried out in areas for followers of "al-Abadi" sect, which is embraced by most of the people of the area. One western source said that these acts of arrest were carried out as a "preventive measure." It added it is considered that the detainees "had just talked a lot and used an offensive language." Relatives to the detainees denied any links between the detainees and al-Qaida organization or the smuggling of weapons buses.
One westerner who lives in Oman since 16 years said "I do not think that any one doubts that there is a certain cell. I do think that its members do not enjoy any support. I do think that people hope that government will catch them."
