Israeli expectations for the return back of Jordan, Egypt ambassadors to Tel Aviv
Regional-Israel, Politics, 2/4/2005

Israel expected that Jordan and Egypt will bring back their ambassadors to Tel Aviv after the convening of Sharm al-Sheikh conference which will bring together the leaders of Jordan, Egypt and Israel in addition to the chairman of the Palestinian authority.

The Israeli foreign minister Silvan Shalom said during a meeting with members of the joint Israeli- British trade council members "I do think that Egypt and Jordan will return back their ambassadors to Israel and thereby will open the way for other Arab countries to dispatch representatives," adding that the Arab states have been waiting for long the opportunity to dispatch their ambassadors" to Israel.

However, these expectations which were repeated by a source close to the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon in statements to the Israeli public radio were not confirmed by Egypt and Jordan.

The Israeli foreign minister Hani al-Malqi expected that Jordan will return back its ambassador to Israel if this will help to give the peace process a push forward between the Arabs and Israel, linking that to a decision taken by the Jordanian King.

Al-Malaqi said "we will not send an ambassador as part of a decoration for the relations, rather as part of the peace process and when this will have an effective role in giving the peace process a push." Egypt kept silent and did not comment on the Israeli expectations.

Each of Jordan and Egypt withdrew their ambassadors from Israel in protest of the measures it carried out against al-Aqsa Intifada which erupted on September 28, 2000.
