Escalation of attacks in Iraq

Attacks renewed in Iraq eliminating thereby the state of optimism of decreased pace of attacks following the elections. Scores were killed or injured among members of the Iraqi army and police as a result of attacks targeting them.

Some 12 Iraqi soldiers were killed in an ambush implanted by gunmen near Karkouk city to the north of Iraq.

At least two Iraqi policemen were killed and other 14 injured while other 26 policemen are considered as missing. This was in an ambush implanted on Thursday on the road leading to Baghdad southward. Iraqi police sources said that the killed and injured men were coming from al-Dewaneyah area to get new cars were the victims of the ambush.

In Baqouba, one Iraqi working for one Iraqi military base was skilled and other four colleagues injured as they were heading for their work as they were exposed to intensive fire. Two American soldiers were killed in what was described by the American army as a security operation in al-Anbar governorates.

For his part the Iraqi minister of the interior Falah al-Naqib said that Abu Musab al-Zarqawei escaped the Iraqi security forces just one hour before a breaking in operation carried out two week ago. A-Naqib said that 350 persons were arrested among what he described as terrorists during the breaking in operations which started before the beginning of the Iraqi elections before the end of December 2004. Other Iraqi officials said that others among the detainees are senior aides for al-Zarqawi.

Al-Naqib stressed that the Iraqi security forces have achieved a great progress, thanks to the American military training operation. He stressed that the Iraqi forces will be able to assume the responsibility of the country's security and borders within 18 months.
