Audiovisual Communication Higher Council ruled 2M to allow PJD to reply
Morocco, Politics, 2/3/2005

The higher council of audiovisual communications (CSCA) ruled that 2M TV channel allow the Party of Justice and Development (PJD)to exercise the right of reply, for the PJD complained it was accused, by the channel, of involvement in a story published by "Attajdid" daily.

"Attajdid" ran a story lately under the headline "sexual tourism and Tsunami: a preventive alarm to Morocco before it's too late," where the paper sustains that the tsunami that his south-eastern countries of Asia is due to God's wrath because of "sexual tourism" in the region.

On January 11, 2M broadcast a report on "Attajdid" story that would have contained, in a statement of an interviewee, an accusation against the PJD saying it would be linked to Attajdid without seeking the opinion of the party, explains the CSCA.

The higher council pointed out the statements of the news announcer that Attajdid was linked to PJD was likely to cause confusion in viewers' minds that is harmful to the PJD.

The CSCA ruling, issued Monday following the PJD and Attajdid complaint, decided that PJD has the right of reply "in the same technical conditions having caused its involvement, provided this reply does not exceed two minutes."

In response to CSCA decision, 2M affirmed on Wednesday it complies by "rules of pluralism, equity and professionalism," underlining it is keen to "fully play its role" while respecting the regulations governing the intervention of the public audiovisual media. (MAP) AR
