Al-Assad, Abdullah discuss efforts to revive peace in the region
Jordan-Syria, Politics, 2/3/2005
The Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday concluded a short visit to Amman during which he discussed with the Jordanian king conditions in the Middle East region.
In conclusion of the talks, both al-Assad and Abdullah stressed their support for the new Palestinian leadership and the need of seeking support to it from the international community in its attempts aiming at establishing the viable independent Palestinian state on the Palestinian national soil.
The joint statement stressed the need of supporting various efforts aiming at giving a push forward to the peace process and coordinating efforts of reactivating common Arab action.
For his part, the Jordanian King stressed the importance of enhancing Iraq's unity and stability, considering that the elections which were held recently in Iraq "was an important step towards enabling all the Iraqis to formulate a better future for their country." The meeting was held between the Jordanian King and the Syrian president before the announcement of the King's participation in the Sharm Esh Sheikh Summit which includes the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon and the chairman of the Palestinian authority Mahmoud Abbas.
Al-Assad and Abdullah have not met since the visit of the Syrian President in April 2004 to Jordan in the context of an Arab tour. In November 2004, the two states reached an agreement on joint border demarcation.
