Algeria, Politics, 2/3/2005
The Algerian foreign minister Abdul Aziz Balkhadem was elected a secretary general for the national Liberation Front in conclusion if its 8th conference in Algiers.
It was expected that Balkhadem was to be elected by the executive commission which was formed according to the constituent of the new party and is composed of 121 members elected by the national council which includes 500 members and replaced the former central committee.
The conferees ratified the unconditional support of the civil reconciliation policy pursued by the Algerian President Abdul Aziz Butaflika and the general pardoning proposal which is expected to be set for general referendum.
On Monday, the conferees unanimously elected Butaflika as a chairman for the party. Butaflika agreed to this presidency considering that it is "honorary." This was expressed in a message he extended on Tuesday evening to the conference.
Balkhadem considered that his party enters through the success of the conference a new phase in which it supports democracy and the work of elected establishments. He stressed the ultimate unification of the front and that the Liberation Front has no factions, rather it is one united party that brings together all militants and Algerians on the principles on the ground of which it was established.
