Mubarak calls for a summit brings together Sharon and Abbas in Egypt
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 2/3/2005

The office of the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon said yesterday that the Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak extended an invitation to Sharon and the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to convene a summit in Sharm Esh Sheikh in Egypt next Tuesday.

The office added that the director of the general Egyptian intelligence Lt. Gen. Omar Suleiman handed over the invitation to Sharon during his visit to Israel. The office explained that he accepted the invitation of President Mubarak to convene a summit which will be at the highest level between the two sides since almost 4 years.

On Wednesday, Lt. gen. Omar Suleiman ended a meeting with Sharon in Jerusalem centered on differences between the Palestinians and the Israelis concerning the Israeli withdrawal from certain cities in the West Bank and the extent of the readiness of the Palestinian Authority to take charge. He also discussed the Palestinian security plan after the withdrawal from Gaza.

Suleiman had held talks in Cairo with the secretary general of the Islamic Jihad movement in Palestine, Ramadan Abdullah Shalah, that concentrated on the calm down with Israel and the relation with the new Palestinian Authority.

Chairman of the political bureau of the Hamas movement Khaled Mashaal also arrived in Cairo to hold similar talks with the Egyptian officials.
