Austrian federal President Heinz Fischer said Tuesday his country is very interested in enhancing bilateral relations with Syria in the cultural, political and economic fields, describing bilateral relations as excellent.

"Austria will work to build strong relations between Syria and the European Union, particularly after signing -- in initials -- the Syrian-EU association," President of Austria said during a meeting with SANA Director General Adnan Mahmoud.

He called for resuming peace negotiations on the Syrian track to achieve the just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East, adding that the EU security is linked to the security of the region, and that the EU has economic interest with countries of the region.

On Iraq, the Austrian President expressed hope that security, stability and territorial integrity will be restored in Iraq and the Iraqi people will be able to run their own affairs.

Meanwhile, Austrian National Council Speaker Andreas Khol said Syria plays a key and pivotal role in the Middle East. During a similar meeting with. Adnan Mahmoud, Khol referred to the credibility of the Syrian policy, adding that President Bashar al-Assad has a very good reputation internationally and he is a dynamic and active man.
