UN report finds Khartoum not guilty over genocide in Darfur
Sudan, Politics, 2/1/2005

The report by the UN investigation committee on human rights in Darfur issued on Monday evening said that the Sudanese government "has not embarked on a genocide policy in Darfur."

The report indicated that the "decisive element to commit a genocide seemed not to be available at least in regard to the central Sudanese government." It added that despite this report "(we) should not underestimate at any rate the dangerous crimes committed in this area." It explained there are violations classified internationally as crimes against humanity, and war crimes committed in Darfur, that are no less regrettable than genocide operations.

The report explained that the committee reached a result to that the Sudanese government and the Jangawid militias are responsible for grave violations of human rights.

The committee which visited Sudan on November 7 through 21 and until January 19 explained that it found tangible evidences confirming the responsibility of the rebels, members in the Sudan Liberation Movement and the Justice And Equity Movement of grave violations of human rights and the international humanitarian law that might be classified as war crimes.

The committee among other things, considered that the UN Security Council should move not only against criminals but also in the name of the victims and as a result of that, the committee asked for the formation of a compensation committee to compensate the victims.

Since two years, Darfur area to the west of Sudan have been witnessing clashes between rebels, that consider the government as having neglected the area, and the government forces supported by militias called the "Jangawid."
