Arab Water Symposium: new ideas on water distribution bad for the region
Regional-Syria, Politics, 2/1/2005

Symposium for discussing water problems in the Arab states entitled "Arab WaterÉCrisisÉ..Problems and Solutions" opened in Damascus on Monday with the participation of experts from several Arab states.

The symposium reviewed situation of Arab water resources and proposals for solving problems of water in the region.

Chairman of Water Studies and Arab Water Security Center, Esmat Fallouh said "the Arab homeland has entered a real difficult stage resulting from having less than 0.5 % of the world water resources despite that the number of its inhabitants constitutes 5 % of the world.

Fallouh called for coordinating Arab positions to guarantee the rights to the common water particularly in light of the so-called "new water thought". "The new water thought means to sell water to the states who are in need and this means that a real crisis may face Arab countries if it is implemented," Fallouh explained.

Water problems are represented in deficiency of water resources, increase of demands, the common water with neighboring countries, non sufficiency of Arab water systems, in addition to problems of financing, administration, quality of water, as well as lack of citizens awarness of water conservation.
