Cairo's conference on Weapons of Mass Destruction
Regional, Politics, 2/1/2005

The international conference on disarming the region's Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs), which concluded its deliberations yesterday in Cairo, called for the necessity to free the Middle East from all kinds of these weapons.

"Participants in the two-day conference agreed that freeing the Middle East from all kinds of WMDs represents a necessity to ensure stability and security for peoples of the region as a whole," the Egyptian Middle East News Agency mentioned.

Worth noting that it is thought by experts that Israel is the only country in the Middle East with Nuclear weapons, and the only country that has refused to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty.

Head of the UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC), an organization that aims to rid the world of weapons of mass destruction , Hans Blix said in a press conference "The main aim of the U.S. allegations on the existence of such weapons in Iraq are just to create a pretext to interfere in Iraq." In Blix's report to UN Security Council before the US invasion of Iraq, Blix had said "the Commission has not at any time during the inspections in Iraq found evidence of the continuation or resumption of programmes of weapons of mass destruction or significant quantities of proscribed items -- whether from pre-1991 or later."

The conference was organized by the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs in Cairo.
