Leader of the Egyptian al-Ghad party rejailed
Egypt, Politics, 2/1/2005

The Egyptian higher state security court decided on Monday to extend imprisonment for the leader of the opposition al-Ghad party, Ayman Nour, for 45 days, for investigations under the accusation addressed to him of falsifying authorizations of applicants for the party's foundation.

Nour's imprisonment decision was considered a blow for the national dialogue expected between the ruling democratic national party and the opposition parties on the political future of Egypt.

The Egyptian attorney on Sunday decided to jail Nour, a member in the Egyptian parliament, for four days, for investigation after he was detained immediately after parliamentary immunity was lifted of him.

Nour denied falsification of the authorization. He said in a telephone call with al-Jazeera TV that the objective of these measures is to "scare and silence his party," and undermine the draft initiative he had submitted to the parliament earlier this month to change the current method the president is elected to office.

The parties affairs committee of the Shoura council agreed on October 28, 2004 to found al-Ghad party after Ayman Nour filed some 5000 authorization signitures to the committee.

The Egyptian minister of Justice Mahmoud Abu al-Leil requested the legislative committee at the People's Assembly ( parliament) to lift immunity off Nour at the accusation of falsification of some 1187 authorizations he had submitted for the foundation of his party.

The founders of al-Ghad party said they are a liberal democrats, liberal socialist, and are for political and social reforms.
