Allawi calls on the Iraqis for unity
Iraq, Politics, 2/1/2005

Interim Iraqi prime minister has called on the Iraqi people to maintain unity, eliminate obstacles and differences of the past, saying that the Iraqis have achieved a great victory in the elections which took place on Sunday "thanks to their determination to live freely and in democracy."

In a televised speech one day after the elections, Allawi said he will hold a national dialogue among all social factions in order to ensure that there is a voice for all Iraqis in the formation of the new government. He vowed to work during the so far left time for his government to ensure the success of this matter.

He said that the new members of the National Council (parliament) as a result of the elections will be announced within one or two weeks.

Allawi commended the efforts of the security forces and the coalition forces in "foiling the plans of gunmen" and in "providing a success for the elections." But he warned against the continued demonstrations of violence.

In this regard, he indicated that the security forces arrested seven persons carrying foreign nationalities while trying to carry out suicide attacks against the ballot centers on Sunday.

The Iraqi interim minister of the interior Falah al-Naqib announced that two Saudis, one Egyptian and one Yemeni were detained during their attempt to attack ballot centers, noting that one Syrian citizen was killed while one Sudanese carried out a suicide attempt.
