Tunis and Rabat say UMA is 'strategic choice'
Tunisia-Morocco, Politics, 1/31/2005

Moroccan Prime Minister, Driss Jettou, and his Tunisian peer, Mohamed Ghannouchi affirmed, in Tunis Friday, that the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA) is a strategic choice and a means to achieve complementariness between countries of the Union.

During the opening of the 12th session of the Moroccan-Tunisian High Joint Commission, co-chaired by the two Premiers, Jettou said UMA is a popular aspiration and an irreversible strategic choice that would consolidate cooperation and solidarity between UMA countries, namely Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia.

It is also a means to take up the upcoming international economic challenges, he pointed out.

Jettou reiterated Morocco's readiness to modernise the institutions and structures of UMA, which has long been hampered mainly because of tensions between some member States.

UMA countries are urged to work together to overcome all obstacles for a new start that would reinforce their cooperation and consolidate UMA's place as a regional grouping, he said.

On his part, the Tunisian Primer Minister said the international situation urges Maghreban partners to work hand in hand to promote the role of UMA, adding that this is crucial to achieve partnership and adopt a common stance in the international scene.
