Sahara: Annan ready to help parties move towards mutually acceptable political solution

UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, said in an interim report to the Security Council he is ready to help parties reach a mutually acceptable final solution to the Sahara conflict.

"I remain prepared to help the parties find a solution to the current impasse and to achieve progress towards a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution," said Annan in the report submitted to the Council in conformity with Resolution 1570.

The UN chief reiterated his call for the release of all Moroccans still detained in Tindouf camps (south-western Algeria) by the Algeria-backed Polisario separatists that are claiming the separation of Morocco's southern provinces (known as the Sahara) from the rest of the country.

I once again appeal to the Frente Polisario to release all

Moroccans whom it continues to hold, in compliance with

international humanitarian law and numerous Security Council resolutions and presidential statements, noted Annan in the report, recalling that the separatist group, which released on January 22 two Moroccan detainees, still holds 410 others captives.

One the two detainees released on January 22 by the Polisario, died two days after his liberation due to his poor health condition.

Morocco had deplored that his jailers awaited the deterioration of his health to accept to release him along with the other Moroccan who is also suffering from serious health problems.
