Resumption of trial of those involved in coupe attempts in Mauritania, including Weld Hedalah

The criminal court in Wad al-Naqqa to the east of the Mauritanian capital on Sunday resumed its sessions in the context of trying 195 military and civilian persons accused of being involved in three coupe attempts that took place in 2003 and 2004, by bringing five detainees before the judiciary.

This trial, however, started on November 21, 2004 in a military barrack, 50 km to the east of the capital Nouakchott.

Former army officer Saleh Weld Hanina who is considered the master mind of several series of coupes was brought yesterday before the court which had suspended its session on January 27th.

The court listens to Weld Hanina and other four detainees including one civilian accused of collaborating with the persons involved in the coupe called Arafat Weld Ahmad and three opposition officials including former president of Mauritania Mihammad Khouna Weld Hedala. Ahmad Weld Dadah and Sheikh Weld Harma.
