Michael Aoun decided to return back to Lebanon before the parliamentary elections
Lebanon, Politics, 1/31/2005

The Lebanese opposition figure Michael Aoun announced he intends to return back to Lebanon before the parliamentary elections due in Spring.

Aoun's announcement came after his meeting with the Maronite Patriarch Nasrullah Sfeir, stressing that his only guarantee is the Lebanese people, in remarks to the fact that he is sued by the Lebanese judiciary.

Aoun added that view points with Patriarch Sfeir reached the last point in defining the march of liberating Lebanon, and only implementation is to be accomplished, noting his desire to reach a calm way for the implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1559 which calls for the withdrawal of the Syrian forces from Lebanon.

In the same context, the Lebanese minister of information Eli Ferzli considered that the decision of Aoun's return to his country is his "rightful and natural decision," stressing that there are no objection to Aoun's return back.

Aoun had called Damascus for convening a conference aiming at "an honorable exit" for its withdrawal from Lebanon. In November 2004, he had also called for a roundtable in which all Lebanese sides including Damascus take part for the same purpose.

Worthy mentioning that Aoun has been living in exile in Paris since 14 years after he had resorted to the French embassy in Beirut following a Syrian- Lebanese attack aimed at toppling the government of the Christian military which he was presiding in 1990. Aoun on the other hand, is accused by the Lebanese attorney of looting during his government rule.
