Sudanese forces deployed in Port Sudan, accusations of extermination against the government
Sudan, Politics, 1/31/2005

The Sudanese security forces were intensively deployed in the coastal port Sudan city following confrontation in the city between the police men and demonstrators -- members of one of a rebel movement there. These clashes resulted in killing 14 persons, according to the government.

Sudanese police units and riot fighting forces took positions in the main residential areas and streets to prevent the renewal of demonstrations. According to witnesses, tension is overwhelming the city.

The Sudanese security forces prevented al-Daja conference -- a rebel movement from which the demonstrators come -- from organizing a collective funeral for persons who were killed during these clashes.

Meantime, the first deputy of the Sudanese President Muhammad Taha vowed that the government will abide by achieving peace and justice in Darfur or in Port Sudan, but he stressed that the government will not give up its commitment to protecting private and public properties with maintaining care to preserve peaceful dialogue with those who stand against violence.

Taha expressed his regret over port Sudan incidents but indicated that the authorities spare no efforts to open the doors for dialogue and that there are many ways to make the other views heard.
