Washington warns its citizens in Kuwait
Kuwait-USA, Local, 1/31/2005

A short time before the elections, the American embassy in Kuwait warned its citizens against the possibility of attacks at their residences.

A statement by the embassy said that "increasing security measures at the American official installations might provoke terrorists and their sympathizers to seek easier targets." The statement added "that more security awareness should be observed in all residential units because the terrorists targeted earlier several housing complexes inhabited by westerners," stressing that among the targeted objectives are the public transports, the housing areas, oil establishments, restaurants, hotels and shopping areas.

For his part, the Kuwaiti minister of the interior Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah said that the "government agree with foreign embassies on the issued warning," stressing that foreigners expect clashes by the "extremists and we do expect that." The USA, Britain and France recommended their citizens last week also to take necessary security measures. Next Tuesday, the Kuwaiti parliament is expected to adopt a new resolution on inspection for weapons and the security situation in general.
