French Total signs a partnership agreement for oil production with Mauritania
Mauritania-France, Business, 1/29/2005
The French Oil Total company, the fourth largest oil group in the world, said it had signed two partnership agreements in production with Mauritania concerning two land areas in the north east part of the country.
In a statement, the French company said the two agreements followed an exploration study agreement signed 18 months earlier on geological works in the two areas. The company is planning for three phases of exploration each lasting three years.
Worthy mentioning that the government of Mauritania signed one partnership agreement with the British "Sterling Energy" for oil in November 2004 in order to take part in investing Shanqit coastal oil field whose storage capacity is estimated at 130 million barrels.
Since a while, several companies including Australian oil "WoodSide company" are working for exploration on the Mauritanian coasts and announced that there is a good storage of oil in the explored areas.
The President of Mauritania Mu'aweya Weld al-Taye announced that year 2005 will be the expected date for producing the first Mauritanian oil shipment.
